We've just reached the half-way point in our Spud Software Winter Weigh Off fitness challenge and our competitors are working hard to lose the weight and avoid the Polar Plunge!
For those who are not familiar with our annual fitness challenge, nineteen of Spud Software's employees and clients have committed to losing weight and getting in shape. The 8 week challenge started on January 3rd and runs through February 24th. Participants set their own weight loss goals and committed to weekly weigh-ins. We're tracking everyone's progress and our final weigh-in will take place at a celebratory party on the night of the 24th. Those participants who didn't meet their goals have pledged to jump in a pool filled with freezing cold water - the dreaded Polar Plunge!
But you don't have to be a part of the Winter Weigh Off to challenge yourself to pursue a healthier lifestyle. At Spud, we're committed to advocating better health choices for our employees and clients, so we wanted to share some ideas for putting the fun back in fitness.
- Engage with technology:
The first step is often setting a goal and planning out how you'll get there. There are numerous apps on the market to help you do just that. Most of them have a free version and help you track your calorie intake vs. calories burned, weight losses and gains, and overall eating and exercise patterns. To further motivate you, they have weekly challenges, badges, and the opportunity to face off against your friends and family members to maintain accountability. And if that doesn't work, realizing that the Big Mac meal you're about to eat has 1,120 calories in it just might.
- Throw an at-home dance party:
You may not love going to the gym - not many of us really do - but it's easy to work out right at home, and it can be fun too. Crank up the stereo (do people still have those?), find your favorite songs from the 80's and throw your own dance party. If no one else is home, you can even belt out your favorite chorus while playing air guitar. Or invite your family to join in. Just 20 minutes of dancing will burn over 80 calories.
- Go Geocaching:
It's a treasure hunt for grown-ups. Geocaching is a fun way to get out, explore and exercise, all with a purpose. All you need is a GPS enabled device and access to geocaching websites or apps to join the hunt. And you'll burn calories while you're at it. Some caches involve a leisurely walk while others will challenge you to hike through wooded regions or even go rock climbing. But you'll be so busy having fun that you won't notice you're exercising as well.
- Snowball fight!
People have the hardest time staying active in the winter - for good reason! But if you're looking for a fun way to burn a few calories, why not head outside with your kids or your spouse and make a game of it? Snowball fights are a fun way to make the cold weather work for you. And with all of the laughing, running, dodging and throwing, you're guaranteed to turn something fun into something healthy too.
- Make eating easy:
In our busy world, it's hard to find time to cook healthy meals. The drive-thru is such a tempting detour, but does anyone ever actually feel healthier after a large fry and soda? Cooking doesn't have to be as intimidating or time consuming as it seems. With tons of sites out there like Pinterest and Cooks.com, it's easy to find fast, healthy meals. So not only will you be eating healthier, but you'll have bragging rights - you cooked it!
