Recently, we gave 14 junior and senior Grand Blanc High School students, ranging in age from 15-18 years old, a tour of our new facility, followed by a presentation from our CEO, Derek Sommer. We spent part of an afternoon with them as they asked questions about our company, from how Spud got started, to how we build our software, as well as the overall software development industry.
"It was a great opportunity for these students to see, first hand, how we operate," said Lyle Knopf, Director of Operations at Spud. "It's a little different than what they're used to in the classroom, so it was definitely an eye-opening opportunity, but it was also a great learning experience as well."
The students were excited about the overall atmosphere and flexibility that our culture offers. We have an open environment with no cubicles, which the students noticed right away. Of course, they also enjoyed our soda machine and playing pinball in our game room.
We enjoyed hearing about some of the projects the students were working on, including a mobile app designed for Grand Blanc High School students and parents. The app, which is available in the the Apple App Store as well as Google Play Store, allows users to get recent announcements, follow the school Twitter account, and even view the school schedule.
"It's great to see what students are working on and to know the future of this industry is in great hands," Knopf added. "This tour was a great opportunity for both the students as well as for us."
