Genesee County Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope. In 2015, they were one of only 14 affiliates nationwide to receive the distinguished Affiliate of Distinction, which recognizes organizations whose standards of excellence, leadership and innovation place them in the top 1% of Habitat for Humanity affiliates nationwide.
"This was a good opportunity to help support a great cause, all while having some fun," said Derek Sommer, CEO at SpudSoftware. "Our culture is built around a fun, family-like atmosphere with our employees, so this fundraiser was perfect for us.
This year’s event attracted many teams from the surrounding area. Gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded to the winning teams of various competitions, such as painter’s putty, a toilet toss, plumber’s play house bean bag throw, boardwalk and ladder ball.
"There was a mini golf course set up where you had to use things like paint brushes and rollers to get through the course, and the toilet toss where we threw foam objects into toilet bowls," said Lana Kowalski, a member of Spud’s team. "We didn’t take any prizes home, but you know what, we had that spirit going."
The fundraiser also included a silent auction and raffles where participants could attain great items including sporting event tickets, memorabilia, casino trips and more.
"It was definitely interesting, but it was fun and it was for a great cause," said Lana, who plans on participating again in next year’s event. "The event was fantastic, we had a great time and everyone there was very welcoming."
