Septic Inspection Information

Over the last 18 years WTS has consistently been the industry leader in the septic evaluation business. To date WTS has performed tens of thousands of septic evals throughout the entire Mid-Michigan area. From Port Huron to Grand Rapids, from Brighton to Roscommon WTS is recognized by every major lender and mortgage company

Our septic evals are the most thorough in the industry.

There are 6 major areas that we cover

1. Flood Test: Each home is flood tested to see how well a septic system can handle a significant amount of discharge in a relatively short period of time. Typically a flood test will take 40-50 minutes.

2. Tracing Fluid: A colored dye is introduced into the system at all gray and black water drains. The tracing fluid passes through the plumbing and into the septic tank. If tracing fluid is discovered above grade a problem exists.

3. Interior Plumbing Inspection: All plumbing is inspected to determine the proper path of discharge. If an illegal discharge has occurred the infraction is listed on the paperwork.

4. Tank Location and Inspection: Each tank is excavated and inspected at the baffle. The baffle is a pipe inside of the tank that separates the fluids form the solids. If the baffle is non-functional or missing it is noted on the paperwork.

5. Drain Field Location: Each drain field is located and isolation distances form well and lot lines are determined.

6. Drain Field Condition: The drain field is probed and excavated to determine the condition above and below the drain tile. Dry stone indicates the system is functioning properly. Wet  stone or soupy conditions typically indicate a possible problem with function.

This explanation is only an over view of the evaluation. A typical septic eval will take from 45-60 minutes. If you have any questions on how a septic system is constructed please see our PDF file and septic maintenance.
